Below is a review of the Leopard and Abrams tanks we have for sale by Radio Race Car Magazine

Leopard A25 – Hobby Engine RC Tank

With no more transmission than working two throttles instead of a steering channel you can be the commander of your own earth shaking, wall breaking, noise making RC tank. With twin motors driven by a 7.2V 600mAh NiCd pack with a half hour run time you can get a lot done, with a range of over 50 meters you can invade from a safe distance in complete control. The wheels all hang by individual suspended swing arms, spring loaded internally for a comfy ride and help soak up undulations and keep as much track in touch with the surface as possible for ultimate traction.

The tank rides on twin tracks which are a rubber loop, for a quiet ride, maximum grip on all surfaces and avoid damaging even the softest surface so is suitable for inside or outside fun at all hours.

The turret rotate all the way around, so you can shoot as you run, the barrel raises and lowers in conjunction with a machine gun burst and the spy tower rotates and lights up red to indicate you are being watched from within. Keep moving or he’ll have a shooting solution and you have had it!

An internal speaker produces engine sounds, while LED’s light front or rear depending on the direction of travel, really obvious during dawn or dusk maneuvers. The Machine gun sounds accompany the barrel movement while the periscope rotates and lights, and when the gun is fired the sound of a projectile launch is accompanied by a recoil action, jolting the whole tank backwards by bumping the tracks into momentary action for a realistic jolt.

You have the choice of the Leopard on the Germans arsenal or the metal monster from the Americans. The M1 Abrams is the standard battle tank of the US Forces and is considered to be the best of its category. It has superior firepower, excellent protective armour and high speed even when passing through rough terrain. Get ready to re-in-act Desert Storm with these two highly detailed battle tanks from Hobby Engine. Replicated with superb detail, these full function tanks let your imagination take over as you bear down on Baghdad, Kuwait or the forests of war torn Bosnia. The M1A1 is all green camouflaged for regular jungle warfare, while the M1A1 is in desert colours to blend in with the sparse landscape and sand strewn horizons for a stealthy approach through the dunes. The leopard 2A5 is all green for disappearing within overgrown countryside where it would typically wait concealed in a strange position with the barrel pointing backwards over one shoulder to break up it’s outline, allowing a prompt kill and rapid escape, whilst still firing at those behind as it makes for the horizon before any retaliation can be mounted. Leopards 2A5 main difference is solidly increased armored defense. Turret frontal part is covered by wedge shaped module additional armor. Modules have built-in dynamic armor elements which can be changed in field conditions.

The Leopard is a real heavy weighty, it’s main Achilles heal, limiting the number of bridges it can cross, while it’s foot print is a bone crushing 1kg/sqr cm, OUCH !

It’s main defense is the uprated armour and angled side deflectors that can be positioned top add defense from a three quarter attack while the gun remains locked on another target, getting round to the trouble maker once the initial target is destroyed. The night vision and triple camera combination allows everyone inside a great view of the battle field, so the gunner can concentrate on the job in hand while the tank commander can scope the horizon for other targets or possible incoming trouble, without having to pop his head out of the safety of the multi layered, reinforced hull.

We ran the tank over sand, grass, tarmac, gravel and mud without incident, the climbing prowess was obvious, taking on 45 degree slopes where the only limit to its climbing ability was the traction of the rubber tracks on the surface, on grass it would go even further but we couldn’t find a steep enough bank to tackle! On tarmac we measured it at 22 seconds for a 20 meter run, that’s 3mph, yes less than walking pace, but more than fast enough when you are trying to steer with two throttles!

Running around at the same speed on grass gravel as tarmac, we were climbing the gap between road and garden with ease, rumbling straight over the step at my front door and out into the garden, climbing steps and bridging gaps upto 2 inches as if they simply weren’t even there. I enjoyed watching each individually sprung wheel soak up sharp objects and react just like the real thing, keeping the tank flat and level so the gun could be kept on target. The bullets fired are super soft and wouldn’t hurt anyone, but you still don’t shoot the cat with it, not because it will be injured but simply because the family cat can keep grudges longer than your sister, and exact revenge in the middle of the night in oh so many ways you really don’t want to go there! Pulling 360 spins with one track fully forward and the other fully back produces a change of direction within its own length but is best performed on a loose surface to allow the tracks to side slip. Direction changes on high grip or long grass is best accomplished by letting go of one stick momentarily before reapplying power to that track, over and over again, letting the track self centre between turning. The drive line is protected by a slipper clutch so even if you do throw a track and jam yourself up, the tracks are protected from damage and the motors cannot be strained. The turret and gun are likewise protected and won’t be damaged even if rotated while the tank is switched off, just cogging round on there ratchet clutches clacking away in protest. Don’t put the tank through water though, the speaker is set in the lowest position in the chassis and the slots allow water in very easily. Even if that were sealed up the wheel suspension pivots and front/rear drive shafts pierce the hull and would allow moisture to enter the main tub, so bear that in mind when you are tempted top go fording!

I got away with it a couple of times but the speaker and speed control were off line for a week while the tank lived in the airing cupboard much to the disgust of my long suffering spouse. Sorry love!

My lad would play with the tank for over an hour at a time, but I never really got to know just what sort of run time the batteries might offer, so had to road tested the tank, yes well I had to see how long it would run for if you just held it flat out, and it went round our village for 20 minutes before grinding to a halt, which is pretty impressive and suggests an average 2 Amp drain at full speed which the connectors and batteries are easily specified to cope with. I got some strange looks, especially as our village is Montgomery of Alamein old regimental barracks, and comments about invasion etc which were all taken in good humour, then I started getting invited to go rumbling over people gardens and investigate different features, and have to say that gravel drives make the tank look great as the wheels bob up and down independently over the ruts and tracks left by cars, while overgrown rockeries have a very realistic combination of rough terrain and scale appearance foliage which makes for great photos and video footage.

There is no race class for tank but there are several clubs you can join including the tank club of great Britain who were in attendance at the last Eastnor Show so plenty of like minded people to get to know if the tank tickles your fancy.
